Chapter 9 Learning Log

What?- Today we learned about the Behaviorist theory. Behaviorist believe in token economy's, negative and positive reinforcement, punishment, rewards, classical conditioning, and operant conditioning. We learned that negative reinforcement and punishment are not the same thing. Negative reinforcement is when you take away something that the students does not necessarily like. Therefore reinforcing to behavior. Reinforcement is something that makes the behavior increase. Punishment is taking away something that a student wants or likes. Punishment decreases the behavior.

So What? This important to know so that I can understand how to discipline students in my classroom. I want to use punishment not negative reinforcement when trying to correct a behavior. On the other hand I want to use positive reinforcement to increase a behavior that is acceptable in the classroom.

Now What?- After learning this information I am now going to try to think about these concepts when a student keeps acting up and doing the same thing over and over. For example if I am having to send a student to the principle's office everyday it is likely that I am reinforcing his behavior. Therefore I am going to try and come up with a way that I can use punishment rather than reinforcement.
